By JT Santana – Writer and Advocate for Change in Iowa
Let us get one thing straight right out of the gate: Rob Sand is not trying to be anyone’s savior. He is not a Twitter firebrand. He is not a Beltway elite. He is a small-town Iowa guy with big accountability energy—and yes, he happens to be a Democrat. But before you scroll away thinking, “Not one of those guys”, let’s talk about something that might surprise you:
There are at least five reasons conservatives—yes, you with the worn Carhartt jacket and a deep respect for personal responsibility—might actually like this guy.
Let us break it down.
1. He Hunts Corruption Like It Is Deer Season.
Rob Sand made a name for himself by chasing fraud like it owed him money. As State Auditor, he created Iowa’s Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) Program, which encouraged government offices—regardless of party affiliation—to trim the fat and save tax dollars. The man is obsessed with rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse. You do not need to be a Democrat to appreciate a guy who’s making sure government lives within its means.
If you believe in watchdogs that actually bite instead of bark, Rob Sand has already shown his teeth.
2. He Supports Small Towns Over Big Donors.
Unlike many polished candidates backed by out-of-state megadonors, Rob Sand has taken a different route—one paved with town hall meetings, gravel roads, and homemade pie. He shows up in rural communities, listens to real concerns, and does not pretend Des Moines has all the answers.
His loyalty is not to party bosses or political celebrities. It is to the folks who fix the roads, feed the kids, run the food banks, and keep Iowa’s backbone strong—even when the cameras are off.
Conservatives who care about local control and rural values? This guy might be your unexpected ally.
3. He Believes in Work Ethic Over Wokeness.
Sand is not interested in performative politics. His priorities are governance, not grievance. He does not spend time chasing social media drama or weaponizing culture wars. Instead, he is focused on practical problem-solving that actually improves people’s lives.
This means he has earned respect across party lines—because, unlike politicians who just yell into microphones, Rob Sand actually works. He runs the numbers. He follows the money. He writes reports people can understand and act on. That is not just refreshing; it is effective.
If you are tired of leaders who complain more than they accomplish, Sand might be your guy.
4. He Champions Veterans and First Responders—Without the Political Theater.
Sand has consistently recognized the contributions of Iowa’s veterans, firefighters, police officers, and EMTs, not by throwing around buzzwords but by prioritizing transparency in how their agencies are funded and held accountable.
His office has audited programs serving these groups, not to shame them, but to ensure that public funds actually reach the people who serve. That means more resources for mental health, equipment, and support, and fewer dollars wasted on bureaucracy or shady contractors.
If you respect the people who protect us, you will appreciate a candidate who protects them—with action, not slogans.
5. He Lives Like One of Us. Because He Is One of Us.
Rob Sand lives in Iowa. He raises his kids here. He shops at the same stores and eats the same gas station breakfast pizza as the rest of us. He is not trying to be a coastal politician in corn-fed camouflage.
That means when he talks about keeping Iowa strong, he is not pitching some utopian dream or trickle-down theory. He is talking about strengthening schools, ensuring local businesses thrive, and holding everyone—public or private—accountable to the same Iowa standard of “don’t BS your neighbor.”
Rob Sand may not carry the conservative label. But you know what he does carry? Common sense, integrity, and a willingness to tell the truth—even when it is uncomfortable.
And in 2025, that might just be the most conservative thing of all.
If You Love Iowa More Than You Love Partisan Games, Give Rob Sand a Look.
You do not have to switch parties. You do not have to agree on everything. But if you are looking for someone who respects your tax dollars, your rural values, and your intelligence, you owe it to yourself—and to Iowa—to keep your mind open.
Sometimes, the best candidate is the one who cares more about getting it right than being right.
And that just might be Rob Sand.
