Liberals, Conservatives, Pharisees — Oh My! Why Everyone Should Be Nervous About Jesus Coming Back

It is almost adorable, in a tragic sort of way. Certain internet prophets seem convinced that Jesus Christ — King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace — is ready to return to Jerusalem. They believe he will arrive like a cosmic Navy SEAL. They imagine him with a MAGA hat, laser-sighting liberals for instant vaporization.

No offense to their imaginative fanfiction, but let us be brutally clear: The Second Coming is not your political rally. It is not your chance to say, “Told ya so.” It is a cosmic reckoning. It is a divine realignment. No one — I repeat, no one — should feel confident that they have a VIP backstage pass.

As C.S. Lewis quipped, “When the author walks on the stage, the play is over.” (Lewis, The World’s Last Night). Not, “When the GOP wins the Senate.” Not, “When Starbucks gets rid of red cups.”

The author is coming. And He is not running for office.

Prepare yourselves: we are about to challenge the smug assumptions. These assumptions are behind the claim, “Jesus is coming back and He hates what liberals are doing.”

Spoiler: Jesus hates sin, not political parties — and He is coming for everyone’s ass!.

What Scripture Actually Says About Judgment

1. The Dangerous Game of Speaking for God

First things first:

When someone claims to know exactly what Jesus is mad about, they tread into risky areas. This is besides, you know, the universal brokenness of humanity. They have wandered into profoundly dangerous theological territory.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.”
Matthew 7:1 (KJV)

There it is.

 Short. Sharp. Inconvenient.

The NIV puts it a little smoother:

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” (Matthew 7:1, NIV)

The Message translation? Even more brutal:

Do not pick on people. Do not jump on their failures. Do not criticize their faults unless, of course, you want the same treatment.

Translation across all versions?
You are not God’s appointed attack dog.
You are a mortal, breathing borrowed air, owing every heartbeat to the mercy of the very Savior     you are weaponizing.

What Does Jesus Actually Say About His Return?

Let us dive into actual eschatology:

  • Matthew 24:30-31 (NRSV):

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn…”

  • Revelation 19:11-16 (AMP):

“…with justice He judges and wages war [on the rebellious nations].”

Notice a pattern?

  • Jesus comes back as a universal judge — not a partisan enforcer.
  • The “tribes” — meaning all peoples, all nations — mourn. No celebration parades for political wins here.

The entire New Testament teaches that sin — not ideology — is the target of divine wrath.
Quoting Bart Ehrman, a leading New Testament scholar:

“Jesus’ apocalyptic vision was not about reforming Rome, but about a cosmic overturning of all corrupt systems — religious and political alike.” (Ehrman, “Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium”)

In other words:

Both liberals and conservatives are fresh out of luck if they think they are exempt.

Historical Misuse: How Politics Hijacked Christ for Power

1. Crusades, Colonialism, and Cultural Domination

Throughout history, when people started declaring what Jesus “hates”, things went very, very wrong.

  • The Crusades:
    • Claimed to be in the name of Christ.
    • In reality: land grabs, power consolidation, mass slaughter.
  • Karen Armstrong notes:

“The cross became the sword. Christendom was never interested solely in faith — it wanted empire.” (Armstrong, “Holy War”).

  • Manifest Destiny:
    • Claimed divine sanction to steal lands and crush Native cultures.
    • Again: Jesus co-opted into political power-grabs.

Every time someone declared, “God is on our side,” bodies piled up.

Spoiler: God is not amused.

Modern Political Christendom

Fast forward to today:

  • Jesus is plastered on political yard signs.
  • Sermons sound like campaign rallies.
  • Salvation is offered at the ballot box, not the cross.

N.T. Wright warns:

“The greatest danger is not atheism, but the idolatry of the divine within nationalist fervor.” (Wright, “Surprised by Hope”)

“The Lamb does not campaign for kings; He overthrows them.”

Every attempt to bind Jesus to a partisan cause ultimately insults His kingship.
Jesus was neither Republican nor Democrat.
He was (and remains) the rightful King of a kingdom not of this world.

Political Idolatry: Worshiping Platforms Instead of the Lamb

1. Both Sides Fail Spectacularly

Let us be honest:

  • Liberals who think Jesus came only to validate personal freedom without moral accountability? Wrong.
  • Conservatives who think Jesus came only to validate authority, wealth, and exclusion? Also wrong.

Elaine Pagels in The Gnostic Gospels reminds us:

“Religious institutions inevitably mimic the political structures around them.”

Meaning:
American political Christianity often resembles Rome. It is the empire that crucified Jesus. This is different than the radical servant-leadership He taught.

Fun Fact: Jesus Was… Wait For It… Anti-Establishment

Consider:

  • He flipped tables in the temple. (Matthew 21:12-13)
  • He roasted religious hypocrites. (Matthew 23:27)
  • He kept company with prostitutes, tax collectors, and outcasts. (Mark 2:15-17)

If Jesus walked into most modern churches, whether they are left-leaning or right-leaning, He would be ushered out. His presence would disrupt the vibe.

“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7, ESV)

Jesus’ standards are invisible to human partisanship.
You cannot campaign your way into grace.

🛑 Public Service Announcement:
If your Christianity requires a political party for validation, it is not Christianity.
It is marketing.

Judgment Starts with the Mirror, Not the Ballot Box

1. Spoiler: Everyone Is Getting Judged

When Jesus comes back:

  • There will not be Democratic judgment or Republican judgment.
  • There will be Kingdom judgment.

As Paul writes in Romans 14:12 (KJV):

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

Notice:

  • Not “account for the liberals.”
  • Not “account for the government.”
  • **Account for yourself. **

Jesus is not returning to validate your Facebook posts.

Let Us Be Blunt

To the individual who asked whether “liberals will be able to stand against Jesus”:
Honey, you will not be able to stand against the brightness of His glory. It is too overwhelming.

Neither will the liberals.
Neither will the conservatives.
Neither will anyone.

Every tongue will confess. Every knee will bow. (Philippians 2:10-11)

And that includes the self-appointed online prophets with WiFi strong enough to download divine indignation into snarky memes.

Final Mic Drop

You think Jesus hates liberals?
Get ready for the real question:

“Did you feed the hungry?
Did you clothe the naked?
Did you visit the prisoner?”

(Matthew 25:35-40, paraphrased)

If not? You might want to worry less about what liberals are doing. Focus more on the plank protruding from your own eye.
(Matthew 7:3)
