There is no nice way to sugarcoat it. Donald Trump betrayed America—and he did it over and over again. Not because he made a few mistakes or bad calls. Every president does that. Trump crossed a much more dangerous line. He put his personal power and ego ahead of American democracy. He disregarded public safety, national security, and the rule of law.
Let us walk through it clearly, with no spin.
1. He tried to steal an election he lost.
After getting beat fair and square in 2020, Trump spent months lying to the American people about a “stolen election.” He filed over 60 lawsuits—all of which failed. He even leaned on Georgia’s Secretary of State to “find” exactly the number of votes he needed to win. If that is not an assault on democracy, what is? (Gardner, 2021; Liptak, 2020)
2. He put personal politics over national security.
Trump was impeached the first time because he tried to bully Ukraine into digging up dirt on Joe Biden. He froze nearly $400 million in military aid. Congress had already approved this money. He used it to pressure a foreign government for personal political favors (House Intelligence Committee, 2019). That is not “America First.” That is “Trump First.”
3. He lied to the public about COVID-19—and people died.
Trump privately admitted to journalist Bob Woodward that the virus was deadly and airborne back in February 2020. Publicly? He downplayed it, called it a hoax, mocked mask-wearing, and promoted junk science. Experts believe tens of thousands of lives could have been saved. This could have happened if the response had been honest from the start (Woodward, 2020; Galea, 2020).
4. He incited a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.
January 6, 2021, is a date that will live in infamy. Trump told his followers to “fight like hell” to overturn the election. They followed his words and attacked police officers. They also hunted down lawmakers. Instead of stepping in, Trump watched it unfold for hours without lifting a finger (U.S. House Select Committee, 2022). That is the literal opposite of defending the Constitution.
5. He disrespected American soldiers.
Multiple credible sources reported that Trump referred to fallen U.S. soldiers as “losers” and “suckers” during a trip to France in 2018. These are the brave men and women who gave their lives for America. Trump could not even fake respect for them (Goldberg, 2020).
6. He cozied up to dictators.
Trump fell over himself to praise authoritarian leaders. He admired individuals like Putin and Kim Jong-un. At the same time, he dismissed America’s own allies and intelligence agencies. He literally said he believed Putin over his own intelligence experts about election interference. In public. On camera. In front of the world (BBC News, 2018).
7. He broke the law by abusing executive power.
Trump declared a fake “national emergency.” He did this to steal taxpayer dollars for his pet border wall project. Congress had refused to fund it. A federal court ruled he had violated the Constitution (Federal District Court, 2019). He did not respect the law. He tried to rewrite it around himself.
Here is the bottom line:
Donald Trump did not just “make mistakes.” He knowingly and repeatedly put himself before the country he swore to serve. His betrayals cost lives. They damaged our democracy. He weakened our national security. These actions trampled the values millions of Americans have fought and died to protect.
And he is still out there asking for your trust again.
Remember everything he showed us about who he really is. Believe him.
