My First Shot at Spoken Word (Yes, Really): When Facts Meet Fire and the Receipts Start Flying
Let’s start with the obvious.
This is not your average poetry night at the café. It is not where someone snaps politely after a stanza about their neighbor’s herb garden.
Nope.
This is my first foray into the world of spoken word. I came in swinging. It was like I mistook the mic for a punching bag. (Spoiler: it kinda was.)
I call the piece:
“You Want Irony? I Brought Receipts.”
Why I Did This
It all started with a comment.
One of those comments on Facebook. The kind that tries to weaponize religion. It attempts to rewrite history with a Sharpie. Somehow it crams the KKK, Hitler, sex trafficking, and abortion into one accusatory paragraph. It’s like a fever dream on Facebook.
You know the type.
I usually respond in writing—with APA citations, case law, and a little sass. However, I felt this one needed something different.
Something spoken. Something raw. Something with rhythm.
Something that says:
“You don’t get to twist the truth and call it patriotism. You don’t get to blame people for problems you created. And you sure as hell don’t get to call me ridiculous without expecting a response.”
Spoken Word: Baptism by Fire (and Fury)
Let’s be real:
This was my first time attempting spoken word.
So no, I’m not trying to be the next Amanda Gorman or Saul Williams.
(Though if either of them is reading this, feel free to call me. I make good coffee.)
I just knew this message needed more than a status update or a quiet sigh.
It needed volume.
Passion.
And maybe a side of righteous indignation served with a mic drop.
Was I nervous? Absolutely.
Did I practice in the mirror and accidentally scare my cat?
Also yes.
But here’s the thing:
Some messages are too urgent for polish.
Some truths demand we speak up—even when we’re shaky.
Even when it’s new.
Even when it’s personal.
What the Piece Tackles
In “You Want Irony? I Brought Receipts,” I dig into:
✔️ The historical flip between Democrats and Republicans
✔️ The hypocrisy of claiming “pro-life” while gutting support for actual life
✔️ The lies behind fentanyl fearmongering and immigration panic
✔️ The danger of weaponizing Christianity to excuse cruelty
✔️ The absurdity of demanding tolerance… for intolerance
✔️ And the real meaning of “God Bless America”
All delivered with rhythm, bite, and the occasional eyebrow raise.
Why It Matters
We are living in a moment. Truth has become a punching bag. People are still shocked when it punches back.
Words matter.
History matters.
And if we’re not careful, the same lies we laugh at today become policies tomorrow.
This piece is for anyone who’s been gaslit by political nonsense dressed up as faith.
It’s for anyone who’s tired of being silenced. They have watched while someone else waves the flag like a weapon.
And honestly?
It’s for me.
To reclaim my voice.
To try something new.
To call it like I see it—and rhyme a little while doing it.
A Note to My Fellow First-Timers
If you’re reading this and thinking, “Man, I’ve always wanted to try spoken word.” You may feel, “But I’m not a poet…”
Do it anyway.
Say the thing.
Feel the fear.
Rhyme terribly for two lines and then hit your stride.
This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about presence.
And purpose.
And having the guts to spit truth in a world addicted to spin.
Final Thoughts (and Fistfuls of Gratitude)
If you’ve ever called out injustice and been told you’re “ridiculous,”
this one’s for you.
If you’ve been silenced by people who confuse privilege with piety,
this one’s for you.
And if you’ve ever wanted to speak—out loud, on purpose, with power—
then let this be your invitation.
Even if it’s messy.
Even if it’s your first time.
Even if your cat still hasn’t forgiven you.
Speak!
