Thank You for an Incredible 2024—Let’s Make 2025 Unforgettable!

As the calendar turns to a new year, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to all of you. Whether you’ve been here since the beginning in 2001 or just stumbled upon my writing, your support, engagement, and encouragement have made 2024 an extraordinary year. From heartfelt conversations to lively debates and moments of reflection, this community of ours has been a source of inspiration. Thank you for being part of this journey.

Now, with 2025 ahead of us, I’m filled with anticipation and high expectations—not just for myself but for the work I share with you. I invite you to join me as I embrace a year of bold commitments, creative exploration, and meaningful conversations across all my blogs.

Kicking Off 2025: Monthly Posts for Change

The new year begins with a powerful mission: empowering prisoners to develop the skills they need to transition out of incarceration and build successful, fulfilling lives. This effort is deeply personal and ambitious, and I’m honored to share that I will be working closely with Dr. Mara Leigh Taylor, a dedicated volunteer and the founder of Getting Out By Going In (GOGI), to bring this vision to life.

Each month, we will dive into practical tools, strategies, and insights designed to address the unique challenges faced by individuals reentering society after incarceration. Our goal is not just reintegration, but transformation—helping these individuals reclaim their agency, rebuild their lives, and realize their potential.

With Dr. Taylor’s extensive experience and the proven GOGI approach, this series will emphasize actionable steps and strategies rooted in empowerment and self-sufficiency. Together, we’ll explore topics like:

  • Building resilience in the face of societal stigma and personal setbacks.
  • Developing communication and emotional regulation skills for healthier relationships.
  • Setting achievable goals for employment, education, and community involvement.
  • Cultivating a growth mindset to overcome past patterns and embrace new opportunities.

Through this collaboration, I aim to amplify the impact of Dr. Taylor’s work, bridging her insights and tools with broader discussions about personal growth, systemic challenges, and the shared humanity at the heart of second chances.

This series is not just for those currently or formerly incarcerated. It’s for anyone seeking to understand the challenges of reentry, support a loved one, or advocate for a fairer, more compassionate justice system. Together, we’ll foster an environment of growth, resilience, and transformation, while dismantling the barriers that hold individuals back from achieving lasting success.

Tackling the Stigma of Death and Dying

This year, I’m also dedicating myself to reducing the stigma surrounding conversations about death and dying. This year, I’m embarking on one of the most meaningful and challenging commitments of my writing journey so far: reducing the stigma surrounding conversations about death and dying. For many of us, these topics are shrouded in discomfort, fear, or even outright avoidance. Yet, death is a universal experience, for some of us it is nearing quickly, and learning to talk about it openly is essential for navigating the grief and loss that touch every life.

To address this, I’ll be presenting a 52-week series, Conversations On Life’s Final Chapter, designed to dive deeply into the many facets of death, dying, and grief. Each week, we’ll explore a specific topic, offering a comprehensive understanding of not just the emotional toll but also the psychological, neurological, and societal layers intertwined with these experiences.

We’ll begin by examining why loss can feel so profoundly overwhelming, identifying the biological and emotional processes that make grief a uniquely human experience. From there, we’ll dive into the intersection of grief and mental health disorders, exploring how anxiety, depression, and PTSD can complicate and deepen the mourning process. Scientific insights into the neurological effects of mourning will shed light on how grief physically impacts the brain, helping us better understand why it feels the way it does.

Equally important, this series will address the practical side of navigating grief, focusing on self-care and healing. We’ll look at how to support ourselves and others during moments of loss, emphasizing the value of compassion and connection. From tips on managing grief in everyday life to stories of resilience and growth, each post will provide actionable guidance for finding balance in the face of pain.

My hope is that this series will serve as a resource, a conversation starter, and a source of comfort for those grappling with the complexities of loss. By approaching death and grief with curiosity, empathy, and honesty, we can create a space where these once-taboo subjects are treated with the respect and understanding they deserve. Together, we’ll take steps toward a more open, informed, and compassionate dialogue about life’s most inevitable reality.

Through this 52-week series, we’ll navigate the complexities of grief, loss, and the psychological and neurological effects these experiences have on our lives. Topics will range from understanding why loss feels overwhelming to the intersection of grief and mental health disorders, and the science of mourning. Each post will offer insights, support, and actionable ways to care for ourselves and others during these deeply personal moments. The series kicks off on January 14, 2025.

A Touch of Satire with The Flaming Desk

For those who appreciate a dose of humor with a side of absurdity, The Flaming Desk is back to keep the laughs coming in 2025. My satirical take on life, the afterlife, and everything in between will continue to offer an irreverent escape from the weightier topics we often tackle. This blog is my outlet for quirky humor, sharp observations, and offbeat musings designed to make you chuckle, think, or both—sometimes at the same time.

The Flaming Desk thrives on blending everyday experiences with outlandish scenarios. Whether imagining bureaucratic red tape in the afterlife, poking fun at societal norms, or creating outrageous “what if” situations, this blog is my sandbox for creative mischief. From tongue-in-cheek commentary on the mundane absurdities of modern life to satirical explorations of what might await us beyond this world (spoiler: it might involve paperwork), expect posts that are as unpredictable as they are entertaining.

This year, I’m doubling down on the humor, diving deeper into the ridiculous, and hopefully sparking a few giggles—and maybe even some debate—along the way. Life is serious enough, so The Flaming Desk will continue to be a space where we can step back, laugh at the chaos, and enjoy a little comic relief. Get ready for a wild, witty ride!
